About the Douglas County Food Policy Council

The purpose of the Council is:

  • To advise elected officials on food-system* related policy issues and opportunities.
  • To provide a community forum for local food system* development.

Participation by diverse voices from all parts of the local food system is essential to the mission and work of the Council. In particular, the Council seeks to recruit members based on two essential considerations:

Double Up Food Bucks

Double Up Food Bucks is a SNAP (food stamps) matching program providing dollar-for-dollar matching at regional farmers’ markets. Douglas County has partnered with organizations across Kansas and Missouri to expand healthy food access in our states.

Food Recovery Partnership

Douglas County is expanding food recovery on local farms. Recovering unsold produce from farms started last year with a local group of community members called Community Organized Gleaners. This growing season Douglas County is joining forces and expanding this effort!
