Getting a Vehicle Title

FAQS

Q: I just acquired a new/used vehicle. What do I do?

A: Get in line virtually with No Wait Inside or visit one of our locations.

 

Q: I have sold my vehicle. What do I do?

A: If you do not intend to transfer the plate to a new vehicle, you may be eligible for a refund of remaining property tax. Please make a packet of the following

  1. This refund form (pdf) filled out and signed
  2. Copy of registration
  3. Plate

You can leave your packet in either our red drop box in the small lot next to the old courthouse at 1100 Mass or the silver drop box in parking lot of our south office at 2000 W 31st St. A refund check will be mailed to you.

 

Q: I just acquired a new/used vehicle and do not have a plate off a car I no longer own to use as a temporary tag. What do I do?

A: There are two options to receive a 60 day temporary tag

OPTION 1: Virtual Line or In-Person

OPTION B: Using Drop Box

Please make a packet with copies of the following documents
1) copy of front and back of the title with the purchasers information completely filled out
2) copy of current insurance for vehicle
3) 60 day checklist (pdf)
4) 8.00 payment by check, cashiers check, money order made payable to Douglas County Treasurer
Leave in either our red drop box in the small lot next to the old courthouse at 1100 Mass or the silver drop box in parking lot of our south office at 2000 W 31st St.

 

Q: I lost the title to my vehicle. What do I do?

Q: I have a disabled form for a new placard signed by my doctor. What do I do?

OR


Put your form in an envelope. Make a note if you want 1 or 2 placards. Write your last name on the outside of the envelope and ‘disabled placard’ Leave in either our red drop box in the small lot next to the old courthouse at 1100 Mass or the silver drop box in parking lot of our south office at 2000 W 31st St. Your placards will be mailed to you.

 

Q: I need to renew placards that are about to expire. What do I do

A: Print and fill out this form https://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/tr159a.pdf

Q: I renewed my sticker/submitted my documents to register my new vehicle. I have not received my sticker/ plate and now my plate/temporary tag is expired. What do I do?

A: You can continue to drive on the expired plate or temporary tag white you wait. According to executive order during this time, you do not have to register or renew your plate until the order is lifted. Q: I need to renew my plate. What do I do?

OPTION A: By mail or drop box
Please make a packet that includes the following:
1) --- Renewal notice (If you do not have your renewal notice, you can reprint it at http://mvs.dmv.kdor.ks.gov/PrintRenewals/ )

 

OR

----Renewal worksheet (pdf)

OR

---You may handwrite the information on the renewal worksheet on a separate paper if you do not have access to a printer
2) Include copy of insurance for each vehicle
3) Payment option (Check, cashier’s check or money order made payable to Douglas County Treasurer. If wanting to pay by card, please fill out this card authorization form (pdf) and include in your packet)

Mail your packet to PO Box 884 Lawrence KS 66044 or leave in the drop box in one of our two locations
2000 31st St (silver box in corner of parking lot)
1100 Massachusetts (red box in small hour lot next to the old courthouse)

Your sticker will be mailed to you. Please allow 2 weeks for processing

OPTION B: Online at https://ikan.ks.gov/

  1. Follow instructions on website

NOTE: YOU ARE INELEIGIBLE TO RENEW ONLINE AND WILL NEED TO RENEW BY MAIL OR DROP BOX IF:

  1. YOU HAVE MOVED DURING YOUR REGISTRATION PERIOD (PLEASE SEE RENEWAL  FAQ)
  2. IF YOUR PLATE HAS EXPIRED (PLEASE SEE RENEWAL FAQ)
  3. YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY DID NOT SUBMIT YOUR POLICY INFORMATION TO THE STATE OR THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE INSURANCE (FOR EXAMPLE TRAILERS THAT DO NOT HAVE THEIR OWN POLICY)
  4. YOU HAVE A PERSONALIZED PLATE AND NEED TO REORDER IN THE NEW 2020 SERIES (SEE RENEWAL FAQ)

 

RENEWAL FAQ

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE MOVED BUT MY NEW ADDRESS AND OLD ADDRESS ARE WITHIN DOUGLAS COUNTY?

A: Please follow the instructions for renewing by mail or drop box. Please make obvious note of your new address.

 

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE MOVED TO DOUGLAS COUNTY FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTY?

A: Get in line virtually with No Wait Inside or visit one of our locations.

 

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF MY PLATE IS EXPIRED AND I AM UNABLE TO RENEW ONLINE?

A: If your plate expired between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020, please follow the instructions on how to renew by mail or drop box. Currently, there are no late fees for these vehicles. If your vehicle expired prior to January 1, 2020 and after June 30, 2020 you will need to renew online at ikan.ks.gov (will renew expire plates) or get in line at our South location

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A PERSONALIZED PLATE IN THE SUNFLOWER SERIES?

The 2015 personalized plate cycle has ended. All 2015 personalized plates need to be reordered in the 2020 design or switched to a standard plate. The 2020 design looks like this

 If you would like to reorder your lettering in the 2020 design please print out https://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/tr715.pdf  Please fill out and sign. Please follow the instructions for renewing by mail or drop box and include an additional $45.50 in your total. If you do not wish to reorder, please follow the instructions to renew by mail or drop box and include a note that says you do not want to reorder in the new design and would like to switch to a standard plate
